Sonam Wangchuk Pauses Hunger Strike to Prevent Further Escalation of Violence Latest News: Climate activist and the face of Ladakh’s demand for inclusion under the 6th Schedule of the Constitution and statehood, Sonam Wangchuk, paused his fast unto death to prevent further escalation of violence that broke out in Leh district of Ladakh earlier today.
Addressing a mass gathering at the hunger strike site, Sonam Wangchuk said, “I want to appeal to the youth of Ladakh to stop this as quickly as possible. This is not in support of any issue in Ladakh, but rather, if it continues, this issue will become even more serious.”
“I want to appeal to the youth to stop this violence and also appeal to the administration to stop using crowd control weapons,” Sonam continued.
“However, our youth are in pain and distress because we are on a hunger strike. Yesterday, two people were taken to the hospital. We do not know what will happen in the coming days, so from now on, we are pausing our hunger strike to stop this violence. We also want the administration to stop their pressure and for the youth to stop their violence.”
“This is our appeal. To make this possible as soon as possible, we are pausing the hunger strike today because a hunger strike does not fulfill its purpose if our youth lose their lives and if instability spreads in Ladakh and the country,” Sonam said in his public address from the hunger strike site.
