New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi's Lok Sabha membership has been cancelled on Friday (March 23). He was a member of the Lok Sabha from Wayanad, Kerala. A letter has been issued regarding this from the Lok Sabha Secretariat.

It is worth noting here that the court of Surat on Thursday sentenced Rahul Gandhi to 2 years imprisonment in the defamation case. Rahul Gandhi said during a rally in Kolar, Karnataka before 2019 Lok Sabha elections, "How come all thieves have the surname Modi?"

Significantly, The Supreme Court ruled in 2013 that if a public representative such as an MLA or MP is sentenced to two years or more, his membership will be cancelled. The Supreme Court had said that this rule would not apply if the representative appealed against the sentence in a higher court.
