PM Modi Meets Australian PM Albanese at G20 Summit, Pledges Stronger Bilateral Ties
Prime Minister Narendra Modi met his Australian counterpart, Anthony Albanese, on the sidelines of the 20th G20 Leaders’ Summit in Johannesburg, South Africa, on Friday. According to a press release from India’s Ministry of External Affairs, the two leaders expressed satisfaction for stronger bilateral ties with the deepening and diversification of cooperation between India and Australia in the last five years since their relationship was elevated to a Comprehensive Strategic Partnership in 2020.
During their meeting, PM Albanese expressed solidarity over the recent terror attack in Delhi and the bus tragedy in Saudi Arabia that claimed the lives of several Indian citizens. Both leaders reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening the global fight against terrorism. They underlined the shared responsibility of democracies in countering violent extremism.
The prime ministers reviewed ways to deepen bilateral cooperation across multiple sectors, which included political and strategic ties, defence and security, energy, trade and investment, critical minerals, technology, mobility, education, and people-to-people exchanges. The discussions also encompassed regional and global matters of mutual concern, reflecting the increasingly multidimensional nature of India-Australia relations.
In a post on social media platform X, PM Modi described the meeting as “very good”. He noted that the five-year strategic partnership has delivered transformative outcomes. He highlighted three key sectors—defence and security, nuclear energy, and trade—where potential for further growth is immense, while also acknowledging the importance of education, cultural exchanges, and other collaborative areas.
Both leaders observed that frequent high-level engagements have imparted significant momentum to the partnership. They also pledged to strengthen the India-Australia Comprehensive Strategic Partnership to new heights. PM Albanese highlighted the strong economic, defence, and security ties, describing the relationship as forward-looking.
PM Modi is attending the G20 Summit from November 21 to 23. He marks that this is the first summit that is being held on the African continent. He is going to discuss issues critical to India and the Global South, including inclusive economic growth, climate resilience, and technological innovation. In Johannesburg, the Prime Minister also expressed his appreciation for the Indian community. He highlighted the cultural and historical bonds between India and South Africa.
India and Australia continue to reinforce their strategic, economic, and cultural ties with this high-level engagement, signalling a future of deeper collaboration in the Indo-Pacific and beyond.
