Darul Uloom Deoband's Fatwa 'Ghazwa-e-Hind' stated, "While Ghazwa-e-Hind, means while attacking India, if anyone gets martyred or dies, then it will be the supreme sacrifice." However, Darul Uloom Deoband's website has reportedly defended the Fatwa by sharing several references from their Islamic scriptures.

To this, NCPCR Chief Priyank Kanoongo said that this is going to give the wrong message, especially to the youth. This is anti-India, he said.

On the other hand, Maulana Sajid Rashidi defended the Fatwa 'Ghazwa-e-Hind' saying that it is a hypothetical situation. He said, "It has been said that only 'if' there was a fight between Hindus and Muslims, then the person killed would be called martyred."
