A 20-year-old woman allegedly committed suicide in Uttar Pradesh's Shamli district after her boyfriend refused to marry her, police said Tuesday. Based on a complaint from the woman's mother, a case was registered against Banti (25) for abatement of suicide, Circle Officer Rajesh Kumar Tiwari said.

The incident took place Sunday at Shamla village under Jhinjhana police station, he said, adding that Banti is at large. The complainant has alleged that the man refused to marry her daughter as his family members had opposed it, Tiwari said. The woman killed herself by consuming poison. The matter is being investigated, the officer said.
