West Bengal CM Rejects Centre’s Plan to Observe ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’ on 50 Years of Emergency
West Bengal CM Rejects ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’ latest news: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee on Monday strongly objected to the central government's decision to observe ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’ (Constitution Killing Day) on June 25, 2025, to mark the 50th anniversary of the Emergency.
Expressing her disapproval, the Chief Minister said the term ‘Samvidhan Hatya’ was disrespectful to the Constitution. She suggested that if the Centre wished to commemorate the event, it should instead be termed ‘Emergency Hatya Diwas’ (End of Emergency Day).
“The central government says that it will celebrate Samvidhan Hatya Diwas on the completion of 50 years of the Emergency this year. I object to the term Samvidhan Hatya. The Constitution is the foundation of our rights; it is the mother of democracy. How can they call it Samvidhan Hatya?” Mamata Banerjee questioned.
“It is written that June 25 will be observed as Samvidhan Hatya Diwas. They could have called it Emergency Hatya Diwas, but instead, they chose to insult the Constitution,” she added.
Taking a swipe at the Centre, the West Bengal Chief Minister further said,“I completely condemn this idea. Is there even democracy in India today? If so, then why is every day turning into Republic Hatya Diwas? Because every day, the republic is being weakened, people’s fundamental rights are being curtailed, the state’s economy is being destroyed, and all constitutional rights of the states are being violated.”
Her remarks come amidst growing criticism from opposition leaders who argue that the Centre is using the occasion to divert attention from current democratic backsliding and suppression of dissent.
