Trump Signals Optimism on China Trade Deal despite Fresh Tariff Escalation
U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday expressed confidence that the United States would strike a “very good” trade agreement with China, ANI reported. Trump made the remark during the visit of Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to the White House.
“We're going to make a deal. I think we're going to make a very good deal with China,” he said.
Surprisingly, this statement came just days after the White House released a fact sheet on Tuesday stating that Chinese imports now face tariffs of up to 245 percent.
Unlike many countries that approached the U.S. for trade negotiations after similar tariff hikes, China retaliated. According to Reuters, the U.S. stated on Tuesday that the president remains open to a trade agreement with China, but expects Beijing to take the first step.
Responding to the tariff escalation, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian said the tariff war was initiated by the U.S., and that China's countermeasures were taken to safeguard its rights and interests. He called these actions “reasonable and legal.”
"We urge the United States to immediately stop extreme pressure, coercion, and blackmail, and resolve differences with China through equal dialogue based on mutual respect," a spokesperson from China's Commerce Ministry added.
Taking a softer tone during the joint appearance, Trump also said he believed the U.S. would have “very little problem” making trade deals with Europe or other partners. He expressed optimism about finalizing a trade agreement with the European Union before the 90-day pause on reciprocal tariffs ends.
