Srinagar, Jul 16 (PTI) More than 100 couples belonging to underprivileged sections from various districts of the Valley tied the knot here at a simple but impressive ceremony, the biggest mass wedding ever in Kashmir, the organisers said.Hundreds of people attended the ceremony which was arranged by a religious and social organization, Jaffri Council, at Amar Singh Club here yesterday.The council has previously also held such functions but this year's event, with 105 couples, was the biggest so far.

In 2015, the council facilitated the marriage of 38 couples from economically weaker sections (EWS) of the society. In 2016, 70 couples were married at a mass event and in 2017, the number was 75.The couples register themselves with the organization and after verifying their credentials and other details, the council starts arrangements for their marriage.The couples are from economically weaker sections of the society.

We verify their credentials and antecedents to find out whether they really deserve monetary and social support or not. Once we find that they do, the organization starts arrangements for their marriage, secretary, Jaffri Council, Gulam Rasool said.He said these functions are sponsored by donors who do not wish to be named. Using the donation money, the council takes care of marriage dresses, ornaments for the brides and other such things.
