Air India, in a brief official statement, said: “Flight AI171, operating Ahmedabad-London Gatwick, was involved in an incident today, June 12. We are deeply saddened and are coordinating with local authorities for investigation and relief efforts.”

Rupani, a senior BJP leader and former CM who served from 2016 to 2021, was reportedly en route to London for a private visit. His death has sent shockwaves across political circles, with tributes pouring in from leaders across party lines.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed his condolences, saying: “The loss of lives in today’s tragic crash, including that of our respected colleague Vijay Rupani ji, is a deep personal and national loss. My prayers are with the bereaved families.”

The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has ordered an immediate inquiry into the crash. Investigators will be examining flight data, weather conditions, and mechanical records of the aircraft.

This is one of India’s deadliest aviation disasters in recent years and has once again raised questions about aviation safety, especially in densely populated urban areas.

Funeral arrangements for Rupani and other victims are expected to be announced once the identification process is completed.
