Ahmedabad Air India Plane Crash Death Toll Latest News Today: In a devastating confirmation, Ahmedabad Police Commissioner G.S. Malik told the Associated Press on Thursday evening that there appear to be no survivors from the Air India flight AI171, which crashed shortly after takeoff en route to London Gatwick.
The flight, which had 242 people on board, including former Gujarat Chief Minister Vijay Rupani, crashed minutes after departing Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport and collided directly into the BJ Medical College UG hostel mess in Meghani Nagar.
“The wreckage is catastrophic. At this stage, we do not believe anyone aboard the aircraft has survived,” Commissioner Malik said.
Rescue teams continued to sift through the debris late into the night. Emergency services reported difficulty identifying bodies due to the intensity of the explosion and subsequent fire. A black box recovery operation is underway, and Air India has confirmed it is cooperating fully with investigators.
Authorities have sealed off the area, and a team from the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Aircraft Accident Investigation Bureau (AAIB) has been deployed to probe the cause of the crash.
