8 Die of Suffocation from Poisonous Gas Inside 150-Year-Old Well in MP, Ex-Gratia of 4 Lakh rupees Announced, Latest News: In a tragic incident, eight locals from Kondawat village in the Chhaigaon Makhan area of Khandwa district, Madhya Pradesh, died of suffocation from poisonous gas inside a long-unused well on Thursday.
The incident occurred during the Gangaur Mata festival, when villagers entered the 150-year-old private well to clean it in preparation for idol immersion, as per festival traditions, according to reports.
“Around eight people were trapped inside the well, and a rescue operation was carried out by the police, SDRF, and Home Guards,” Khandwa Collector Rishav Gupta told reporters.
“All eight bodies have been recovered and sent for post-mortem to a nearby hospital,” he added.
Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Mohan Yadav has announced an ex gratia of 4 lakh rupees for the families of the deceased.
In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), Chief Minister Yadav confirmed that all eight individuals died due to suffocation from poisonous gas inside the well. He explained,
“One person had descended into the well to clean it for the Gangaur immersion and got trapped in the mire. In an attempt to rescue him, seven others entered the well one after another and also got trapped. Sadly, all eight individuals succumbed due to poisonous gas inside the well.”
