Tamil Nadu, Madurai Bench Temporarily Bans Parties from Holding Public Meetings Latest News: The Madurai Bench of the Madras High Court issued an interim injunction prohibiting political parties from holding public meetings or events on state and national highways in Tamil Nadu until Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) are formulated, ANI reported.
The order was passed while hearing four Public Interest Litigations (PILs) seeking directions to frame SOPs for mass gatherings to prevent incidents similar to the recent Karur stampede.
The government also assured the court that it will not permit any meetings on state and national highways, except at earmarked places, until the SOPs are finalized.
Noting that a similar case regarding SOPs is pending before the Principal Seat in Madras, the judges allowed the petitioners to be impleaded in that matter.
The court’s direction comes against the backdrop of the deadly Karur stampede that killed over 40 people during a public event held by TVK chief and actor Vijay on September 27. Investigations into the stampede are currently underway.
