"Am I not entitled to meet and speak with my husband on phone and in person wherever he is detained?"
Sonam Wangchuk’s Wife in Delhi Being Followed by Vehicles;Moves to the Supreme Court Latest News: Climate activist, now detained under the NSA, Sonam Wangchuk’s wife, who is now in Delhi to make her voice heard, stated that she is being followed everywhere in Delhi and that an employee of their institution was tortured in police custody.
Wangchuk’s wife, Gitanjali Angmo, stated that she could not establish communication with her husband ever since he was detained. Wangchuk was arrested on 26 September, two days after he broke his fifteen-day-long fast in the wake of the violence in Leh Ladakh, wherein four people were killed in security personnel firing. He is accused of inciting violent protests in Leh Ladakh.
When Gitanjali Angmo, was asked whether she was successful in establishing communication with her husband, she told ANI, “Not at all. I only got a call from a member of an apex body who received a call from the DSP saying that some people could meet (Sonam Wangchuk). I told him that I want this in writing. But I have never received anything like that.”
“It is important to share that I am being followed everywhere in Delhi. A car follows me wherever I go, and I don’t know who they are,” she added.
She continued, “The staff that was working closely with us has been detained. They are in police custody... They are being beaten up. They are being tortured mentally and physically...”

She came to Delhi from Leh Ladakh after reporters were allegedly stopped from reaching her on the matter as security was beefed up around her institution.
Today, while speaking to ANI, she said that after she left for Delhi, the security around their institution was withdrawn.
She stated that neither she nor anyone close to them knows about the health conditions of Sonam Wangchuk. She said that they are not allowed to meet him and give him medicines. “I don’t know about his well-being, nor does anybody else,” she added.
She stated that someone in Jodhpur tried to meet Wangchuk; however, that person was not allowed to meet him.
She further stated that on one hand, Wangchuk has been detained ‘inhumanely,’ and on the other hand, “a witch hunt against us has been intensified.”
She alleged that when the government agencies could not find anything against Wangchuk and their institutions, their staff members were being physically and mentally tortured.
She stated these were the reasons why she moved to the Supreme Court.
“This is why we had to approach the Supreme Court... I am worried about how he must be getting treated in jail... This message should reach throughout India: If justice can be delayed for a celebrity, with whom the whole country is rallying, who has worked at the grassroots, then what recourse does a commoner have?"
Gitanjali Angmo has moved to the Supreme Court. On 2 October, around 5:30 PM, she filed a habeas corpus petition against the detention of the celebrated climate activist in the Supreme Court.

Gitanjali Writes to the President of India, the Prime Minister, the Home Minister, the Law Minister of India, and the LG of Ladakh
Gitanjali Angmo has written to the President of India, Droupadi Murmu, PM Narendra Modi, the Law Minister of India, and the LG of Ladakh, requesting the release of innovator, educator, and environmentalist Sonam Wangchuk.
In a letter addressed to the President of India, as the wife of Sonam Wangchuk, she stated, “You, being from a tribal community/background, would understand the feelings of the people of Leh Ladakh better than anyone else.”
She asked the following questions before the President:
- Am I not entitled to meet and speak with my husband on phone and in person wherever he is detained?
- Can I not be of assistance to my husband to know his grounds of detention and to espouse his legal rights of seeking justice before the court of law?
- Am I not entitled to know the condition of my husband, who has been in detention since 26 September 2025, with no communication with me or anyone else close to us?
- As responsible citizens of India, are we not entitled to peaceful freedom of expression and movement?
I have sent this representation for the immediate release of Shri Sonam Wangchuk to the President of India, Prime Minister of India, Home Minister, Law Minister of India, and the LG of Ladakh, with a cc to DC Leh. pic.twitter.com/6Y0xa46sNK

Angmo called the “illegal detention” of her husband, the manner in which the State and its agencies were allegedly “hounding” them, and the surveillance they were kept under, “deplorable.”
“It is violative of the spirit and ethos of the Constitution of India, including Articles 21 and 22, which guarantee every citizen the fundamental right to legal representation. Shockingly, even this minimal right has been completely denied to us,” her letter to the President of India read.
She appealed to the President of India to intervene and stated, “As the President of India, you embody the principles of Equity, Justice, and Conscience!”
She requested the unconditional release of her husband, saying Sonam Wangchuk is “a person who can never be a threat to anyone, let alone his Nation. He has dedicated his life to serve the brave sons of the soil of Ladakh and stands in solidarity with the Indian Army in defence of our great nation!”
