Trump’s Ceasefire Claims: India Doesn’t “Need to Be Persuaded,” Says Congress MP Shashi Tharoor
Congress MP Shashi Tharoor on Trump’s Ceasefire Claims, latest news: MP Shashi Tharoor on Tuesday responded to Donald Trump’s repeated claims of brokering a ceasefire between India and Pakistan, stating that if there was any persuasion by America, it would have been aimed at Pakistan, not India.
Speaking to ANI, the Congress MP said, "We have enormous respect for the American presidency, and we will speak with that respect in mind. But broadly speaking, our understanding is a bit different... No one needed to persuade us to stop. We had already said to stop. If there was any persuasion by the American president or his senior officials, it would have been persuasion of the Pakistanis. They would have had to be persuaded."
"We don't need to be persuaded because we don't want war. We want to focus on development. That's the basic message," said Tharoor, as the delegation he is leading enters the final leg of its US visit.
He added, "...We had consistently said from the very beginning on May 7th that we are not interested in prolonging the conflict. This is not the opening salvo in some sort of war. All it is, is retribution against the terrorists — period. If Pakistan had not reacted, we would not have reacted..."
India and Pakistan were in a war-like situation for four days in early May, following the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives in the meadows of Baisaran, also known as "Mini Switzerland."
On April 7, India launched Operation Sindoor, a strategic and calibrated military strike targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
On May 10, Donald Trump announced a ceasefire between India and Pakistan, claiming that he had mediated the agreement before either state made a public move.
"After a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE," Trump wrote on May 10.
The former U.S. President has repeatedly claimed that his intervention in the escalating tensions between India and Pakistan prevented a potentially catastrophic outcome, calling it “a bigger success than I’ll ever be given credit for.”
Most recently, he repeated these claims during a press conference with Elon Musk, as the tech billionaire stepped down from his role as the U.S. government's special envoy.
His recent claim comes after the External Affairs Minister denied any such mediation by the US in an interview with Germany’s FAZ news outlet.
