Congress Demands Special Parliament Session on India-Pakistan Conflict; Questions Raised Over Ceasefire, Trump's Claims

Congress leader Pawan Khera on Sunday reiterated the party's demand for a special session of Parliament in the wake of the recent four-day war-like situation between India and Pakistan following the Pahalgam terror attack that claimed 26 lives on the Baisaran meadows on April 22, 2025.

Speaking to ANI, Khera said,"Congress party has been demanding for a long time that a special session of the Parliament be called. It was called during the war of 1962, but its astonishing that now even after the war has ended, there has been no Parliament session.”

He further questioned the sudden ceasefire, the role of international actors, and the government's silence.

“Questions are arising everyday, the biggest of them is Donald Trump's claims. We also want to know the conditions of the ceasefire, why was it so sudden and announced by the US President?... The CDS' statements again raise many questions. The government needs to come forward... The country needs to know our defence preparedness..." Khera added.

Trump’s Claims and India’s Response

US president Donald Trump was the first to announce the recent ceasefire between India and Pakistan. He claimed United states 'mediated' between India and Pakistan and  the two countries 'have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE.'

"fter a long night of talks mediated by the United States, I am pleased to announce that India and Pakistan have agreed to a FULL AND IMMEDIATE CEASEFIRE. Congratulations to both Countries on using Common Sense and Great Intelligence. Thank you for your attention to this matter!," wrote in a post.

Two days back, during a Press conference with tech Billionaire Elon Musk at the oval house, Trump reitarated his claims, saying the united states 'stopped India and Pakistan from fighting,' adding 'I believe it could have turned into a nuclear disaster.'

“We talked trade, and we said we can’t trade with people who are shooting at each other and potentially using nuclear weapons. The leaders of those countries were great, they understood, and they agreed — and that all stopped," Trump said in the press conferance with Elon Musk  as the Space X owener stepped down as the US government special employee.

Indian Government Disputes U.S. Mediation

However, India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, in an interview with Germany’s FAZ News, firmly rejected Trump’s narrative and dismissed fears of a nuclear conflict.

“At no point was a nuclear level reached,” Jaishankar said, asserting that the cessation of hostilities was decided between military commanders through direct contact.

He explained, “The morning before, we effectively hit and incapacitated Pakistan's main airbases and air defense system. So who should I thank for the cessation of hostilities? I thank the Indian military because it was their action that made Pakistan say: ‘We are ready to stop.’”

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) released the English translation of Jaishankar’s interview on Monday.

CDS Confirms Loss of Indian Aircraft
On Saturday, India’s Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) General Anil Chauhan acknowledged that India lost some jets during the recent conflict with Pakistan. Speaking to Bloomberg’s Haslinda Amin, General Chauhan stated, “What is important is not that the jets were downed, but why they were downed.”

While he did not disclose the exact number of aircraft lost, he refuted Pakistan’s claim of downing six Indian jets, calling it “absolutely incorrect.” General Chauhan’s remarks marked the first official confirmation of Indian aircraft losses during the conflict.
