HR88B8888: INR 1.17 Crore — India’s Most Expensive Car Number Plate Ever

At a VIP-plate auction held by the Haryana Transport Department on Wednesday, the registration number HR88B8888 made a record. With a worth of INR 1.17 crore, it officially became the costliest car registration number ever sold in India, according to India Today.

The auction was conducted online through the official portal. It drew 45 applicants, the highest number of bidders for any single number this week. The bidding opened at a base price of INR 50,000 and then escalated rapidly during the day; by noon, the bids had reached INR 88 lakh before closing at the final INR 1.17 crore mark at 5 pm.

The appeal for this particular plate lies in its pattern. The plate breaks down as:
HR: Code for Haryana,
88: the RTO / district identifier
B: the series code
8888: the four-digit registration number.

However, the sequence Visually appears like a continuous “88888888”, because the uppercase “B” resembles the digit “8”. This string of eights holds symbolic weight, as many reports cited that the digit “8” is associated with prosperity, luck and abundance, making this number highly desirable.

The record sale left behind recent high-value number-plate sales with huge margins. For instance, last week in Haryana, the plate HR22W2222 fetched INR 37.91 lakh, a large sum, but now overshadowed by HR88B8888’s leap into seven-figure territory.

Officials said that once the successful bidder deposits the full amount within five days, the number will be officially assigned to a vehicle registered at the relevant RTO. In this case, it is the Kundli RTO in the Sonipat district.

This astronomical bidding result reflects more than connection with numbers. It highlights a growing trend across India: for many people, registration plates are becoming status symbols in themselves. In a world where exclusivity and symbolism matter, HR88B8888 stands as a milestone: a registration plate worth more than many cars.

For readers and car enthusiasts, this number plate is a window into changing consumer psychology, culture, and the premium that people are willing to pay for identity and prestige.
