With the Diwali travel season underway, Indian Railways has introduced over 200 special trains to manage increased foot traffic across stations. These trains, covering routes between major hubs like Anand Vihar, New Delhi, Patna, Ahmedabad, and others, aim to ensure safe and timely travel. Additionally, 20 special trains are scheduled to operate on October 29.
On Thursday, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared that 7,000 trains would operate during Diwali and Chhath Puja, accommodating roughly 200,000 additional passengers per day. Railway authorities noted that 4,500 special trains ran during last year’s Diwali and Chhath Puja season. Seeing increased demand, the ministry expanded services this year.
To prevent overcrowding at stations, Central Railway has also imposed temporary restrictions on platform ticket sales at high-traffic stations, including Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Dadar, and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus. This move follows a recent incident at Bandra station, where nine people were injured, two critically, in a stampede as passengers rushed to board a Gorakhpur-bound train.
