Born on September 26, 1932, in Punjab, Dr. Singh rose from humble beginnings to become a globally respected leader. His academic credentials were stellar, with degrees from the University of Cambridge and a D. Phil from Oxford University. Over his illustrious career, he held key positions, including Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, Chief Economic Advisor, and Deputy Chairman of the Planning Commission.

As Finance Minister from 1991 to 1996 under Prime Minister PV Narasimha Rao, Dr. Singh spearheaded reforms during a time of economic crisis, introducing policies that liberalized India’s economy. His budget speech in July 1991, where he famously stated, “No power on earth can stop an idea whose time has come,” marked the beginning of India’s economic transformation.

During his tenure as Prime Minister, Dr. Singh prioritized inclusive growth, pushing for landmark rights-based legislation such as the Right to Information, Right to Education, and Food Security Act. He also demonstrated political acumen by securing the Indo-US nuclear deal in 2008, strengthening India’s global standing despite facing domestic opposition.
