Jio users in Punjab: Years after boycott call during farmers' protest, Reliance regains dominance

Years ago, when the farmers' protest was at its peak, the corporate houses were boycotted by the farmers.

Jio Users Connection in Punjab News: A few years after the call for a boycott of Reliance Jio, it now seems that the prominent telecom house has captured Punjab again. If we look at the data on mobile connections in Punjab, the number of connections of Reliance Jio and Bharti Airtel were at the top.

The number of connections of a family in Punjab had plummeted due to farmers' agitation, but now it seems to have regained its lost reputation. According to the report released by the Telecom Regulatory Authority of India, Punjab has a total of 3.49 crore mobile connections by May 2024.

This means that on average every Punjabi has a mobile phone in his hand. Looking back, in May 2019, there were a total of 3.91 crore mobile connections in Punjab and now after five and a half years, the number of these connections has reduced to 3.49 crore. During these years, 42 lakh connections have decreased in Punjab, which shows that most Punjabis are fed up with mobile phones.

Secondly, if we look at the connections of Reliance Jio, it had 1.39 crore connections in Punjab in May 2020. Farmers' protest began in August 2020, with the Samyukta Kisan Morcha calling for the boycott of these corporate houses. In December 2021, the farmers' protest concluded and in May 2022, the number of Reliance Jio connections dropped to 1.06 crore.

The reasons may be anything, but the farmers are telling the effect of their call behind it. In two years, 33 lakh connections of Reliance Jio were reduced. Looking ahead, Reliance has once again established its dominance in Punjab.

Reliance Jio connections increased to 1.15 crore in May 2023 which further increased to 1.22 crore in May 2024. Similarly, Bharti Airtel has 1.26 crore mobile connections in Punjab as against 1.22 crore a year ago. In the year 2019, the number of Airtel connections in Punjab was 99.64 lakh. Reliance Jio has increased its rates in July itself. The company has increased the Rs 155 plan to Rs 189.
