Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the country's first underwater metro tunnel

PM Narendra Modi, India's First Underwater Metro Tunnel in Kolkata: India on Wednesday marked a historic milestone as Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated the country's first underwater metro tunnel, linking Kolkata's Howrah Maidan to Esplanade.

The tunnel, spanning 1.2 km and situated 30 meters beneath the Hooghly river, signifies a significant engineering feat and a leap forward in urban transportation. Stretching 4.8 km in total, the tunnel is a part of the East-West Metro Corridor project, connecting Sector Five to Sealdah. Notably, the Howrah metro station will become the deepest in the nation, further enhancing the city's transit infrastructure.

The corridor, as per Metro Rail, was initially designated in Kolkata's master plan back in 1971. Kaushik Mitra, Chief Public Relations Officer of Metro Railway, emphasized the historical significance, stating 'Howrah and Kolkata, both centuries-old cities in West Bengal, will be linked beneath the Hooghly River by this tunnel.'

According to a senior state BJP leader, Prime Minister Modi arrived in Kolkata on Tuesday evening and proceeded directly to the Raj Bhavan, where he spent the night. Today, on Wednesday, he inaugurated the Howrah Maidan-Esplanade section of Kolkata Metro's East-West Metro Corridor, a segment of which traverses under the Hooghly River.

Later in the afternoon, he will head to Barasat to address a public rally.
