Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann vs Partap Bajwa: ‘12 Vaje' Remark Triggers Storm in Punjab Assembly

“Please sit down, it's only 12 PM. You can check the time,” Mann said.

Punjab CM Bhagwant Mann vs Partap Bajwa in Vidhan Sabha Latest News Today: A fiery face-off between Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann and Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa disrupted proceedings in the Punjab Vidhan Sabha on Friday, as a seemingly casual remark escalated into a full-blown political and religious controversy.

The verbal clash began when CM Mann slammed Bajwa for allegedly deflecting attention from issues concerning the people of Punjab. “Raise matters that go against Punjab and Punjabis,” Mann told Bajwa, urging him to focus on the core agenda of the special session.

As Bajwa continued to interrupt, the Chief Minister asked him to calm down and take his seat. “Please sit down, it’s only 12 PM. You can check the time,” Mann said.

To this, Bajwa fired back with the widely-known Punjabi phrase, “12 tuhade vaje hone hai.” While commonly used in informal settings, the phrase has historically been weaponized to mock Sikhs — leading to instant outrage from the ruling AAP benches.

AAP leaders Aman Arora and Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema condemned Bajwa’s comment, calling it deeply offensive and disrespectful to Sikh sentiments. “This is not just a personal attack — it’s a direct insult to Sikh history and identity. It cannot be ignored,” said Cheema.

As chaos unfolded in the Assembly, Speaker Kultar Singh Sandhwan struggled to maintain order. The House was briefly thrown into disorder with sloganeering and protests from AAP MLAs, demanding an apology.

Veteran Congress MLA Rana Gurjit Singh attempted to cool tempers, urging both leaders to shift their focus back to the agenda. “Let’s return to the purpose we are here for. These personal jibes are not helping Punjab,” he appealed.

The Congress party, meanwhile, has downplayed the incident, with sources close to Bajwa claiming the remark was used in jest, not intended to hurt anyone’s religious feelings.

However, AAP continues to press for a formal retraction and apology, warning that such language has no place in the sanctity of the Assembly.

The episode adds to the string of confrontations that have dominated the ongoing Vidhan Sabha session, overshadowing key policy discussions and fueling partisan tensions in Punjab’s already charged political climate.
