“Who brought Ansari to Punjab? Who gave shelter to gangsters? You did,” Cheema thundered
Harpal Cheema vs Partap Singh Bajwa in Punjab Vidhan Sabha Session Today: Harpal Cheema vs Partap Singh Bajwa in Punjab Vidhan Sabha Session Today: The Punjab Vidhan Sabha turned into a political battlefield on Friday as Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema lashed out at Leader of Opposition Partap Singh Bajwa amid ongoing tensions over a recently filed FIR and rising political hostilities.
As Cheema announced the extension of the special Assembly session till July 15, he seized the opportunity to take aim at Bajwa, who was staging a protest in the House. What followed was a scathing attack, with Cheema accusing Bajwa of being the “creator of gangster culture” in Punjab.
“Who brought Ansari to Punjab? Who gave shelter to gangsters? You did,” Cheema thundered. “We are here to end gangsterism and drug mafias in the state, but whenever we take action, you stand with them. Punjab has seen your true character. You are the king of U-turns,” he added, amid heated reactions from opposition benches.
The confrontation follows the registration of an FIR against Cheema and fellow cabinet minister Aman Arora under BNS Sections 336(4), 356, and 61(2). The complaint, filed by Bajwa, accuses the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) of sharing a doctored video that distorted his remarks on the Vigilance Bureau’s treatment of a female Congress MLA — making it appear as if he supported Akali leader Bikram Majithia.
Cheema, however, dismissed the FIR as a politically motivated move backed by the BJP. “Go ahead, file 100 FIRs — we are not scared. You used the BJP to file a fake case against us. Punjab knows everything, and Punjab knows who you are in touch with,” he declared.
The fiery exchange has only intensified the already tense atmosphere in the Assembly. While AAP has stood firmly behind its ministers, Congress leaders have demanded accountability and called for legal action.
As the session continues, the focus appears to be shifting away from legislative business and toward a full-blown political slugfest — raising concerns over whether urgent state matters will get the attention they deserve.
