Dry ice is the solid form of carbon dioxide, forming at a chilly temperature of -78.5 °C (-109.3 °F). This non-flammable, colorless, and odorless substance finds extensive use in various industries, particularly in the food sector. It serves as a reliable method for preserving and transporting perishable food items.

Commonly utilized to maintain the freshness of ice cream, meat, dairy products, and other foods, dry ice effectively prevents spoilage by keeping them at low temperatures during storage and transit.

In addition to its applications in the food industry, dry ice also plays a crucial role in the medical field. It is employed to keep tissues, blood, and medicines cool, ensuring their viability and efficacy.

Despite its utility, regulatory bodies such as India's Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) deem dry ice to be highly hazardous. Therefore, it is strongly advised to avoid direct contact with dry ice and refrain from consuming it. Furthermore, it is essential to keep children and pets at a safe distance from dry ice to prevent any potential accidents or injuries.

Ingesting dry ice can lead to significant health hazards due to its exceptionally low temperature. Accidental consumption may result in irritation to the mouth, throat, and stomach, causing pain, swelling, and redness. This irritation can potentially lead to permanent tissue damage, leaving lasting scars.

As dry ice sublimates, it releases carbon dioxide gas, which, if inhaled in large quantities, can obstruct breathing and cause suffocation. Swallowing a substantial piece of dry ice can cause internal injuries, resulting in bleeding and abdominal pain. In severe cases, consuming a significant amount of dry ice can be fatal.
