Shambhu Border Re-opens for commuters

The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha led the protests since February 2024

Shambhu Border Re-opens for commuters latest news: In a breakthrough, the Shambhu Border, which was shut for more than a year because of farmer protests, reopened today. Haryana security officials started removing the cemented barricades put up to stop Punjab farmers from marching towards Delhi as part of their 'Delhi Chalo' movement. JCB machines were used to remove the concrete blocks, bringing an end to a long standoff.

The resumption comes on the heels of eviction of protest farmers from Shambhu and Khanauri borders on Wednesday evening. Dozens of farmer leaders, such as Jagjit Singh Dallewal, who is on indefinite fast, and Sarvan Singh Pandher of the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha, were arrested by Punjab Police. The move has evoked strong condemnation from farmer leader and Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) spokesman Rakesh Tikait, who criticized the Punjab government's action.

The Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha led the protests since February 2024. Eviction and re-opening of the border have instigated new protests, with farmers declaring dharnas in front of deputy commissioners' offices all over Punjab.

Punjab Finance Minister Harpal Singh Cheema justified the eviction, referring to the negative effect of the prolonged closure of the highway on business and commerce. He reiterated that the state government stood by farmers' legitimate concerns but requested that they target the central government.

The opening of the Shambhu border is expected to bring back normalcy in the area, but tensions persist as farmers keep expressing their dissent. The matter is being kept under close watch, with additional security at the border to check further escalations.
