Haryana Police lifts barricades as punjab police clears khanauri border latest news: Security was upped on the Haryana-Punjab border on Thursday morning after the Punjab police eviction of protesting farmers and detention of their leaders on Wednesday night. The action attracted sharp criticism from the BJP and other opposition parties, who called it a "cowardly act" by the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government.
The Shambhu and Khanauri border points were closed for more than a year by farmers who were agitating for a legal assurance of minimum support price (MSP). On Thursday morning, concrete barricades at the Shambhu border were also dismantled by Haryana police.
On Wednesday, farmer leaders from Samyukta Kisan Morcha (Non-Political) and Kisan Mazdoor Morcha were received by a central delegation headed by Union Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan in Chandigarh.
On the way back, a number of leaders, such as Sarwan Singh Pandher and Jagjit Singh Dallewal, were taken into custody in Mohali. Punjab police subsequently cleared protest camps, tearing down temporary tents and taking away trolleys and vehicles deployed on the border.
Farmer leader Guramneet Singh Mangat said he faced heavy barricading in Mohali. Pandher was arrested at the Zirakpur checkpoint and brought to the Bahadurgarh Commando Police Training Center in Patiala. Dallewal, who was in an ambulance, was also arrested, with the police reportedly removing the driver.
At the Khanauri border, about 3,000 police officers were sent to vacate the area. Deputy Inspector General of Police (Patiala Range) Mandeep Singh Sidhu asked farmers to vacate voluntarily, stressing that police "do not want any confrontation." Patiala Superintendent of Police Nanak Singh said that the area was vacated after giving "proper warnings." He further said that buildings and vehicles were being dismantled and Haryana police would do the same to restore highway movement.
Other Deputy Commissioner Sukhchain Singh also made declarations over a megaphone, requesting protesters to vacate the road within "10 minutes." Police then arrested the rest of the farmers and took them away in buses.
Videos on social media depicted police dismantling protest platforms at Shambhu and Khanauri. JCB machines were utilized to dismantle structures, while at Khanauri, the saroop of Guru Granth Sahib was shifted as per Sikh tradition.
The atmosphere is still tense as the authorities make efforts to reopen the highways and deal with the aftermath of the eviction.
