Many viewers are confused about whether the film is based on a true story, as it incorporates elements from real history, including the Holocaust and the life of a Hungarian-Jewish architect. For example, the title suggests that Tóth’s work follows the Brutalist architectural style, which became popular in the 1950s after World War II. This style focuses on simple, raw materials and structural design rather than decorative details.

However, "The Brutalist" is not based on a true story or a book. Director and writer Brady Corbet confirmed that the film is a fantasy movie, stating, "It’s a virtual history. This is the only way for me to access the past."

Even the character László Tóth os not based on a real person. Corbet mentioned that the film was dedicated to artists who "never had the chance to realize their visions," linking Tóth to his real-life counterparts.
