Kangana Ranaut Slams Protests Against Emergency in Punjab, Calls It "Harassment of Art"

Kangana Ranaut expressed her dismay, calling the protests an attack on artistic freedom.

Kangana Ranaut on Emergency Controversy in Punjab Latest News: Actor Kangana Ranaut has reacted strongly to the ongoing protests in Punjab against her latest film Emergency. The protests, led by the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and several Sikh groups, have disrupted screenings of the film in various cities, alleging it portrays Sikh issues inaccurately and tarnishes their image.

In her first official statement, Kangana Ranaut expressed her dismay, calling the protests an attack on artistic freedom. "This is complete harassment of art and the artist. From many cities in Punjab, reports are coming in that these people are not allowing Emergency to be screened," she said.

Clarifying her stance, Kangana emphasized her respect for Sikhism and its values, saying, "I have utmost respect for all religions, and after studying and growing up in Chandigarh, I have closely observed and followed the Sikh religion. This is a complete lie and propaganda to tarnish my image and harm my film Emergency."

The film, which explores the political and social upheaval during the Emergency declared by then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in 1975, has faced resistance from Sikh groups claiming it misrepresents attacks on prominent Sikh shrines and the events surrounding the 1984 Sikh genocide.

Despite the challenges, the actor remains firm in her stand. Known for her outspoken nature, Kangana also took to social media to urge fans to support her film. "Art should be a medium of dialogue and discussion, not suppression," she said.

The protests have disrupted screenings in multiple cities, with theaters reporting cancellations amid fears of backlash. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann has yet to respond to the SGPC's request to ban the film in the state.

While Kangana remains defiant, the controversy surrounding Emergency continues to escalate, raising questions about the intersection of art, politics, and religious sensitivities.
