Former PM Dr Manmohan Singh Death News: The Indian cricket team donned black armbands during the second day of the fourth Test against Australia at the Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) as a mark of respect for former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, who passed away in Delhi on Thursday.
“The Indian Cricket Team is wearing black armbands as a mark of respect to former Prime Minister of India Dr. Manmohan Singh, who passed away on Thursday,” the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) stated in a post on X.
Dr. Singh, aged 92, died due to age-related medical conditions. According to AIIMS, he suffered a sudden loss of consciousness at home and was rushed to the hospital, where resuscitative efforts were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at 9:51 PM.
Tributes poured in from across the cricketing world, with former players such as Yuvraj Singh, Harbhajan Singh, Irfan Pathan, Gautam Gambhir, Shikhar Dhawan, and VVS Laxman expressing their condolences and acknowledging Dr. Singh’s profound contributions to the nation.
Gautam Gambhir, a former opener and current MP, wrote, “Dr. Manmohan Singh’s leadership and economic vision transformed India. He was a gentleman leader who will always be remembered.” Shikhar Dhawan added, “An exemplary statesman who guided India with wisdom and humility. Rest in peace, sir.”
Dr. Manmohan Singh, born in Punjab in 1932, served as India’s Prime Minister for two consecutive terms from 2004 to 2014. Known for his transformative economic policies and steady leadership, he retired from the Rajya Sabha earlier this year after a remarkable 33-year tenure in the house.
