Punjab Governor Gulab Chand Kataria announced on Tuesday that he will lead a four-day ‘padyatra’ across the state to mobilize public support against the rising drug menace.
According to Governor Kataria, the awareness march, organized by the Punjab Red Cross, is scheduled to begin on February 9. The governor said that the march will cover Tarn Taran on the opening day, followed by Ferozepur on February 10, Fazilka on February 11, and conclude in Abohar on February 12. This marks his third such initiative to combat drug abuse through direct public engagement.
Stressing the need for a "people's movement," the governor noted that community involvement is crucial, highlighting that women are often the most affected by this crisis. He cited that the state government has already arrested over 23,000 drug dealers and seized significant quantities of narcotics.
Governor Kataria also emphasized the role of village defense committees and skill development. He appreciated the efforts of Rajya Sabha MP Vikramjit Singh Sahney in training reformed addicts, noting a goal to equip 10,000 youth with employable skills. Additionally, the governor confirmed he is in discussions with the center to revive the Border Area Development Fund to further bolster regional growth and security.
