The team, which underwent a massive squad revamp in the mega auction last year, showcased its new strength under the guidance of Ricky Ponting, marking a winning start to their season.
Batting first, Punjab Kings put up an impressive total of 243 runs in 20 overs. One of PBKS’s star buys, Shreyas Iyer, justified his price tag with an impactful performance. Bought for ₹26.75 crore in the 2025 auction, he played a crucial role in securing the team’s first win of the season. Leading from the front, Iyer smashed an unbeaten 97 off just 42 balls, anchoring the innings. Young talent Priyansh Arya contributed 47 runs, while Shashank Singh’s blistering 44 off 16 balls ensured a strong finish for PBKS.
Gujarat Titans responded with a spirited chase, led by Sai Sudharsan (74 runs) and Jos Buttler (54 runs). However, despite their efforts, GT fell short by 11 runs, ending at 232/5 after 20 overs.
After this home away victory, Punjab Kings will now play their first home match against Delhi Capitals (DC) on March 30 at the PCA New Stadium in Mullanpur (near Mohali).
