Assam Gets Its First Chess Grandmaster as Mayank Chakraborty Becomes India’s 94th Grandmaster
Assam has entered the Grandmaster map of Indian chess for the first time, as 16-year-old Mayank Chakraborty achieved the prestigious title after completing the final requirement at an international tournament in Sweden.
With the feat, Chakraborty became the first Grandmaster from Assam and the wider North East region, marking a major milestone for chess in the area. The achievement has been widely celebrated by the sports community in his hometown of Silchar and across the state.
The teenager secured his final Grandmaster norm at the 8th GM Tournament held at Hotel Stockholm North in Stockholm. Competing against a strong field, the International Master delivered a consistent performance throughout the event.
Chakraborty finished the tournament at the top of the standings with seven points from nine rounds. His performance included victories over higher-ranked opponents and an unbeaten run in the closing stages.
Along with the final norm, he also crossed the required 2500 rating threshold set by the world chess governing body FIDE, fulfilling the criteria for the Grandmaster title.
The achievement also makes Chakraborty the 94th Grandmaster from India, further reflecting the country’s growing strength and depth in international chess.
