From Punjab Village to Global Stage: Simmer Singh Becomes U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel

Simratpal “Simmer” Singh’s journey from humble roots to the global stage is a story of grit, hard work and achievement. On Wednesday, November 26, 2025, according to U.S. Army officials, Singh, deputy commander of the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers – Japan Engineer District (JED), was promoted to the rank of lieutenant colonel during a ceremony at JED’s headquarters on Camp Zama, Japan. The Army stated that this event was presided over by Commander Patrick Biggs, who administered the reaffirmation of the oath of office.

Singh’s parents, Sukhbir Singh and Jasvir Kaur, pinned the new rank on their son in front of family, friends and colleagues. Singh addressed those gathered and said, “The Army and this Nation have given this village kid from Punjab far more than he deserves, and his hope is to be able to give even a tenth of it back,” as per his remarks shared by the U.S. Army. He paid homage to mentors and leaders who removed barriers and “lifted him ”up”—pledging to emulate their example.

Singh carved a distinguished career for more than fifteen years in uniform. According to U.S. Army sources, he started his career as a combat engineer and platoon leader in the 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, and saw active deployment in Kandahar, Afghanistan, under Operation Enduring Freedom, leading over 180 combat patrols, clearing routes, fortifying base defences and supporting the establishment of a medical facility in Shah Wali Kot Province.

His roles broadened post-deployment, from brigade finance officer handling a multimillion-dollar training budget and supporting over 20 units to being part of the 249th Engineer Battalion at Fort Belvoir, Virginia. He contributed towards national-defence power missions and emergency responses to hurricanes, including Matthew, Harvey and Maria. Later, he also served as an instructor and assistant professor of economics and finance at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, the Army confirmed.

Singh’s story is an example of pride and inspiration for many readers in Punjab and across the Indian diaspora. The story has proved again that a “village kid from Punjab”, with perseverance, faith and dedication, can rise to a global level. It’s a story of not just an individual’s success, but of broader hope, rooted in humble beginnings and carried forward with honour.
