B.C. Premier David Eby to Urge PM Carney to Label Lawrence Bishnoi Gang a Terrorist Group in Canada
British Columbia Premier David Eby announced today that he will formally request Prime Minister Mark Carney to designate the notorious Lawrence Bishnoi gang as a terrorist organization in Canada.
Eby said that such a designation would significantly strengthen law enforcement’s ability to investigate the gang’s activities and crack down on the rampant extortion that has raised alarm across the province and beyond. "This isn’t just a British Columbia issue," Eby stated. "The presence and influence of organized gangs from India, particularly the Bishnoi group, is being felt in Alberta and Ontario as well."
The proposed designation under Canada’s anti-terror laws would give police broader surveillance powers, increased funding for investigations, and the ability to freeze assets—tools Eby believes are critical to halting the gang’s criminal operations on Canadian soil.
The Lawrence Bishnoi gang, named after its alleged leader currently jailed in India, has been linked to high-profile violent crimes and international extortion rackets, including threats against Indo-Canadian business owners and entertainers. Authorities say its influence has grown through transnational connections, particularly with operatives embedded within Canada.
Eby emphasized the urgency of the matter, noting the growing sense of fear in local communities. “Families and businesses are being shaken down. Our police need to be empowered to act decisively.”
The Premier’s upcoming letter is expected to be sent to Ottawa by the end of this week. If accepted, the gang’s classification as a terrorist entity would mark a significant move in Canada's efforts to counter international criminal organizations operating within its borders.
The federal government has yet to respond to Eby's initiative, but growing pressure from provincial leaders may soon push the matter into national security discourse.
