Driving to 'Jai Ho': Mumbai Unveils India’s First Singing Road on Coastal Corridor
India has officially inaugurated its first "musical road" on the Mumbai Coastal Road, where motorists can now hear the tune of the iconic song "Jai Ho." According to the report, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis launched the innovative stretch on Wednesday. This project makes India the fifth country in the world to implement such technology, following Japan, Hungary, South Korea, and the UAE.
The musical strips are located on the northbound carriageway, approximately 500 metres after exiting the Worli-bound tunnel.
The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) explained that the effect is created using precision-engineered rumble strips or grooves embedded in the road surface. When a vehicle travels over these grooves at a constant speed of 70 to 80 kmph, the friction between the tyres and the road generates sound waves that produce the melody.
To ensure a smooth experience, the BMC has installed warning signs at 500, 100, and 60-metre intervals inside the tunnel to alert drivers of the upcoming stretch and the required speed.
The project, conceptualised by former MP Rahul Shewale, aims to blend infrastructure with cultural expression. Named after Dharmaveer Swarajyarakshak Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the Coastal Road corridor now offers this unique "melody road" experience to help ease the monotony of daily commuting.
