Indian Students in Canada Economy, Immigration Latest News: Indian students are making substantial contributions to Canada's economy, yet they are not receiving benefits or facilities that match their input. This disparity has come to the forefront as tensions between India and Canada, stemming from the Hardeep Singh Nijjar case, now extend beyond political friction, affecting broader bilateral relations.
A key concern raised by India is the lack of transparency and delays in the Canadian visa process for Indian students, along with instances of what India calls "unnecessary harassment" of visa applicants.
During the 12th Trade Review Conference of the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Zurich, Indian representatives highlighted this issue, stressing that Indian students are vital to the Canadian economy. With over 1.84 lakh (184,000) Indian students currently in Canada, they form a significant part of the country’s academic and financial ecosystem. However, despite their contribution, these students are met with slow visa processing and inadequate facilities.
Indian officials pointed out that while Indian students face such hurdles, individuals with questionable backgrounds seem to obtain visas more easily, raising concerns about biases or corrupt practices within the Canadian visa system. This situation has even led to an increase in illegal immigration through Canada, further complicating the issue.
India has also rejected Canada's claim that the expulsion of 30 Canadian diplomatic officers from India has caused delays in visa processing. Indian representatives argued that if India can manage issuing 10,000 to 12,000 visas per month in Canada, there is no reason Canadian authorities cannot match this pace.
