Canada Latest News Today: Canadian MP Chandra Arya has voiced strong opposition to a motion in the House of Commons that sought to designate the 1984 anti-Sikh riots in India as genocide. Arya, who was the only MP present during the motion's introduction, vetoed it by denying unanimous consent, thereby halting its approval.
Arya took to X to share his stance, stating, “Today, the Member of Parliament from Surrey-Newton attempted to have the Parliament declare the 1984 riots in India against Sikhs as genocide. I was the only Member present in the House to say NO, and my single objection was enough to prevent this motion from being approved.”
The MP disclosed that he faced immediate threats inside the Parliament building after opposing the motion, adding that he regularly encounters efforts to silence his advocacy for Hindu-Canadians.
Arya cautioned that the motion may resurface in the future, driven by what he described as the “politically powerful Khalistani lobby.” He urged Hindu-Canadians to actively connect with their MPs to ensure sustained opposition. “Reach out to your local Members of Parliament and secure their commitment to oppose this motion whenever it arises,” Arya advised.
While acknowledging the horrors of the 1984 riots, Arya stressed that calling them genocide is both inaccurate and divisive. “Thousands of innocent Sikhs lost their lives in those horrific events, and we all condemn this brutality without reservation. However, labelling these tragic and dreadful riots as genocide is misleading and unjustified,” he stated.
He further warned that such a designation could deepen divides within Canada’s Hindu and Sikh communities. “This narrative fuels anti-Hindu elements and undermines harmony between our communities. We must remain united against these destabilizing forces,” he remarked.
Arya concluded by calling on Hindu-Canadians to safeguard their community’s interests. “Let us stand united against this anti-Hindu agenda and ensure the stability and harmony of our communities in Canada,” he said.
