Canadian Government Raises Minimum Wage Rate: A Relief for Temporary Workers and International Students, Including Indians, latest news: The Canadian government has increased the Federal Minimum Wage Rate for those working in the federally regulated private sector. Effective April 1, the minimum wage has been raised from 17.30 Canadian dollars to 17.75 dollars per hour.
This comes as good news for individuals working in temporary jobs or studying in Canada, and particularly benefits the Indian community.

Minister of Employment, Workforce Development and Labour, Steven MacKinnon, said in a statement, “The federal minimum wage brings stability and certainty to Canadian workers and businesses alike and helps reduce income inequality across the board. Today’s increase brings us one step closer to building a more fair economy.”
This increase has been updated individually by each province, and wherever a higher wage rate exists—whether federally or provincially—that higher rate will apply.

Employers have been instructed to update their payroll systems to ensure that all employees, including interns, receive the new minimum wage.
This raise is considered a positive step, especially for international students who are financially struggling. With high rent, food prices, and tuition costs, many students rely on foodbanks to make ends meet. However, some foodbanks have recently been forced to turn people away due to overwhelming demand, leaving many international students without support. The increase in the minimum wage is expected to help these students better manage their expenses.

According to a report by India Today, Indians make up 3.7% of Canada’s population, and Indian workers represent 22% of the Canadian temporary workforce. Indian students also form the largest group of international students in Canada. The Canadian government's announcement to raise the minimum wage will directly benefit this group, as the hike applies to interns as well.
