New Democratic Party triumphs in Manitoba, celebrating a significant electoral win

MANITOBA: In a resounding victory, the New Democratic Party (NDP), led by Jagmeet Singh and boasting a strong presence of Punjabi-origin candidates, has emerged triumphant in the Canadian province of Manitoba. NDP secured a remarkable victory by clinching 34 out of the 57 seats in the Legislative Assembly.

Highlighting the diversity and inclusion within the NDP, three Canadian politicians of Punjabi origin made notable gains in the electoral race. Diljit Brar emerged victorious from the Barrows seat, while Mintu Sandhu (Sukhjinder Paul) and Jasdeep Devgan secured wins from The Maples and Mac Phillips constituencies, respectively.

All three successful candidates represent the New Democratic Party, which has now earned the majority in the assembly. This triumph paves the way for the formation of an NDP-led government in the state. Additionally, Brar and Sandhu are currently being considered for cabinet positions, reflecting their potential contributions to the administration.

The electoral race saw a total of nine migrant Indians of Punjabi origin vying for positions. Notably, in the 2019 assembly elections, two Punjabi individuals, Daljit Brar and Mintu Sandhu, had also emerged victorious in Manitoba, Canada.

Diljit Brar, hailing from the village of Bhangchiri in Muktsar district, belongs to an academic family and migrated to Canada in 2010. He is settled in Winnipeg along with his wife Navneet Kaur and is a former student of Punjab Agricultural University (PAU), Ludhiana. Brar had previously worked at the Manitoba Department of Agriculture until 2018.

Mintu Sandhu, on the other hand, moved to Canada with his parents at the age of 16 in 1989 and has been a resident of The Maples for the past 34 years. With 18 years of experience running his own gas station, Sandhu has significantly contributed to modernizing the transportation system in Manitoba and generating numerous job opportunities during his tenure on the Motor Transport Board of Manitoba Infrastructure.
