Trump 'Pissed Off' Over Putin’s Remarks on Zelensky, Warns of Tariffs, Latest news: US President Donald Trump has expressed anger at Russian President Vladimir Putin over his remarks made on Friday about Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
Speaking to NBC News in a phone interview early Sunday, Trump reacted to Putin’s comments on ‘temporarily putting Ukraine under external governance’, stating, “I was angry and pissed off when Putin started getting into Zelenskyy’s credibility and started talking about new leadership in Ukraine.”
Putin claims that President Zelenskyy’s term expired last year and that he therefore lacks the legitimacy to sign a peace deal.
According to the BBC, last week, Putin suggested the possibility of a UN-run government in Ukraine to organize new elections before beginning peace talks.
During the phone call, Trump told Kristen Welker that if a deal is not signed, "and if I think it was Russia's fault, I'm going to put secondary sanctions on Russia."
He added that there would be a 25-50% tariff on all oil and stated, "Anybody buying oil from Russia will not be able to sell their product—any product, not just oil—into the United States."
Russia has effectively rejected a U.S. proposal for an immediate and full 30-day halt in the fighting, and the feasibility of a partial ceasefire in the Black Sea was thrown into doubt after Kremlin negotiators imposed far-reaching conditions.
On March 18, the two leaders engaged in a 90-minute phone call, during which Putin refused Trump’s request for a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine. However, he agreed to limit attacks on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure.
Trump had been accused of being too close to Putin in recent weeks, but his remarks on Sunday marked a shift in his stance toward the Russian president.
