These students, who are alleged to support Hamas or other extremist organizations, have been asked to self-deport as their F-1 student visas have been revoked due to their involvement in campus activities.

This step is not confined to students who take part in campus activism but also to those who have liked or shared anti-US updates on the internet. The State Department has recently introduced an AI-driven app named "Catch and Revoke" to detect and revoke the visas of students who support Hamas or other listed terror groups.

The department is also considering applications from new students, either for academic study visas, professional study visas, or exchange visas. Applicants convicted of such practices will be prohibited from studying in the United States.

Immigration attorneys have indicated that certain Indian students may have been sent such deportation emails for minor activities, such as posting messages on social media. Based on the most recent report from Open Doors, of the 1.1 million foreign students enrolled in the U.S. during the 2023-24 academic year, 331,000 were Indians.

This directive comes after a statement by U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio about the cancellation of visas for numerous foreign students on grounds of suspected anti-national activities.
