Thai and Cambodian Leaders to Meet in Malaysia for Peace Talks Amid Ongoing Conflict
Thai and Cambodian Conflict Latest news; AP, news agency, reported on Sunday that the leaders of Thailand and Cambodia will meet in Malaysia for talks aimed at ending the ongoing hostilities between the two nations. The development follows mediation efforts led by U.S. President Donald Trump, who has urged both sides to agree to an immediate ceasefire.
The conflict, now in its fourth day, has claimed at least 34 lives and displaced around 168,000 people.
According to the report, Jirayu Huangsap, a spokesperson for the Thai Prime Minister’s Office, said that Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai will attend the peace talks on Monday in response to an invitation from Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to discuss regional peace efforts. The spokesperson also indicated that the Prime Minister of Cambodia would attend the talks, although this has not been officially confirmed by Cambodian authorities.
Late on Saturday night, Donald Trump posted on X (formerly Twitter) that he had spoken with both parties and that both sides are “for an immediate ceasefire and peace.”
“I just had a very good call with the Prime Minister of Cambodia and informed him of my discussions with Thailand and its Acting Prime Minister. Both Parties are looking for an immediate Ceasefire and Peace. They are also looking to get back to the ‘Trading Table’ with the United States, which we think is inappropriate to do until such time as the fighting STOPS. They have agreed to immediately meet and quickly work out a Ceasefire and, ultimately, PEACE! It was an honor to deal with both countries. They have a long and storied history and culture. They will hopefully get along for many years to come. When all is done, and peace is at hand, I look forward to concluding our trading agreements with both,” Trump posted.
According to an AP report, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet confirmed on Sunday that his country had agreed to pursue an “immediate and unconditional ceasefire.” He also said Trump informed him that Thailand had also agreed to halt hostilities following the conversation with Acting Thai Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai.
“This is positive news for the soldiers and people of both countries,” Hun Manet said in a statement.
Hun Manet added that he has assigned his deputy, Foreign Minister Prak Sokhonn, to coordinate the next steps with U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio and to engage directly with Thailand’s foreign minister to implement the ceasefire.
Thai expressed cautious support for the ceasefire, stating that Thailand agreed in principle but emphasized the need for “sincere intention” from Cambodia, the thai foreign ministry said. The Ministry added that Phumtham thanked Trump for his intervention and called for swift bilateral talks to work out concrete steps toward a peaceful resolution.
The conflict began on Thursday when a landmine explosion along the disputed border injured five Thai soldiers. Both countries have since blamed each other for initiating the clashes.
Meanwhile, evacuees from affected areas expressed hope for a swift and lasting end to the fighting.
