Ireland: Indian Man Assaulted, Stripped, and Left Bleeding by 'Racist Gang' Armed with Bladed Knuckles
Indian Assaulted in Ireland Latest News: An Indian man in his 40s was assaulted and partially stripped by a group of attackers in Tallaght, Dublin, Ireland, on Saturday after being falsely accused of acting inappropriately around children, the Irish Times reported.
According to the report, he was severely beaten until passersby intervened and was left bleeding. The incident occurred around 6 in the evening on July 19.
He was hospitalized and was released early Sunday morning.
Gardaí, the country’s law enforcement agency, have launched an investigation into the matter, and it is being probed as a possible hate crime, the report said, citing sources.
The false accusations of inappropriate behavior around children later spread online, including by “prominent far-right and anti-immigrant accounts.”
Garda sources told the news outlet that there is no truth to the accusations made by the attackers.
Some of the attackers are believed to have carried out other attacks on foreign nationals in the Tallaght area in recent days.
Several such attacks have been carried out in the past months, based on false accusations of inappropriate behavior, the report said.
Paul Murphy, a member of the People Before Profit–Solidarity (PBPS) political alliance in Ireland, who serves as a Teachta Dála (TD) for the area, has condemned the assault.
“It’s horrifying to see a vicious attack like this happen in our neighbourhood.
Responsibility lies not just with those who perpetrated the violence but also with those who have been spreading racist lies. The community is really shocked and outraged and will stand together against violence, hate and division,” Murphy is quoted as saying in the area.
Earlier this week, Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan said he was aware of instances of foreign nationals being falsely accused of crimes, the report said.
“Increasingly, you hear of people blaming immigrants for crimes. All I can say to you is: I have asked for the statistics and when you look at the prison population of people convicted of offences, the percentage of immigrants in prison is lower than the percentage of immigrants in society,” Jim said.
“So there’s no substance to the suggestion that immigrants are more likely to commit a criminal offence,” Jim added.
Indian Ambassador to Ireland Akhilesh Mishra called out RTE News for reporting the incident with "alleged assault."
"How can an 'alleged' assault cause such horrible injury and bleeding? Aghast at the insensitivity and obfuscation of RTE News! Thank Hon @paulmurphy_TD @gardainfo and Irish people for their sympathy, support to the innocent victim. Hope the perpetrators are brought to justice!" he wrote in a post on X.
According to an India Today report, an eyewitness who claimed to have witnessed the incident said the 'racist gang' stole the victim’s bank cards, phone, shoes, and trousers.
The Irish woman whose comments have reportedly gone viral stated that the man was staying with a friend and had arrived in the country just a week ago.
"I was driving to my mother-in-law when I saw 13 teenagers, including a woman, rounding up that man. I saw that the man was completely dripped in blood from his head to toes. His entire body was covered in blood," the woman is quoted as saying by India Today.
"His trousers were pulled down. He was whacked. His head was gashed due to a blade in the knuckles of those animals. And this attack happened at 6 pm in broad daylight," she alleged.
"Four Indian men were stabbed on the face by these teens in the past four days. How many of you knew that or saw it in the news?" she further said.
The woman said that the victim pleaded for help; she gave him first aid and a blanket to cover himself and later called the police and an ambulance.
She said that the gang left him to die.
“The man gave me his name, his phone number and the address of his family in India. He also told me why he came to the country. He's been here for a week," she further said.
Indian Embassy in Ireland in a post on X, said"Regarding the recent incident of physical attack on an Indian national happened in Tallaght, Dublin, Embassy is in touch with the victim and his family. All the requisite assistances are being offered. Embassy is also in touch with the relevant Irish authorities in this regard.
