Following the victory, Trudeau posted on X, stating: "You can't take our country — and you can't take our game."

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau took a swipe at US President Donald Trump on Thursday after Team Canada defeated Team USA 3-2 in overtime during the 4 Nations Face-Off Championship Game in Boston, Massachusetts.

Following the victory, Trudeau posted on X, stating: "You can't take our country — and you can't take our game."

His remark comes in response to Trump’s repeated provocative statements referring to Canada as the “51st state”, calling Trudeau its “governor”, and even suggesting that NHL legend Wayne Gretzky should run for Canadian Prime Minister.

Trade War Escalates

Beyond the verbal jabs, tensions between Ottawa and Washington have escalated due to Trump’s new economic policies. The US President has:

  • Declared an economic emergency to justify imposing tariffs of 10% on all imports from China and 25% on goods from Mexico and Canada.
  • Announced a reduced 10% tariff on Canadian energy imports, including oil, natural gas, and electricity.

In retaliation, Trudeau has announced Canada will impose 25% tariffs on $106 billion worth of American imports.

"Canada will be responding to the US trade action with 25% tariffs against Can$155 billion ($106 billion) worth of American goods," Trudeau stated.

Additionally, he urged Canadians to avoid vacationing in the US as a means to push back against the tariffs.

Trudeau Faces Criticism

While Trudeau’s hockey-related post was well received by many, he faced backlash for insensitivity, as it came shortly after a Delta plane incident at Toronto Airport. Critics accused him of focusing on sports rather than addressing a serious aviation safety issue.
