Who Was the ‘Sleeping Prince’? Saudi Royal Passes Away After Nearly Two Decades in Coma
Who Was the ‘Sleeping Prince’?: Prince Al-Waleed bin Khaled bin Talal Al Saud, popularly known as the "Sleeping Prince," has passed away nearly two decades after slipping into a coma following a tragic car accident in London in 2005, India Today reported.
Born in April 1990, Prince Al-Waleed turned 36 this year. He was the eldest son of Prince Khaled bin Talal Al Saud.
The accident occurred while he was studying at a military college in the United Kingdom. It left him with severe brain injuries and internal bleeding, putting him in a coma. Since then, he remained on life support. Despite medical advice, his father, Prince Khaled bin Talal, consistently refused to withdraw life support, holding on to the hope of a divine miracle.
Over the years, occasional videos of Prince Al-Waleed showing slight movements sparked hope among the public and his family that he might recover.
Confirming his death, Prince Khaled released a statement that read, "With hearts full of faith in Allah's decree and destiny, and with profound sadness and sorrow, we mourn our beloved son Prince Al-Waleed bin Khaled bin Talal bin Abdulaziz Al Saud, may Allah have mercy on him, who passed away to Allah's mercy today."
The funeral prayer was held on Sunday, 20 July, at Imam Turki bin Abdullah Mosque in Riyadh, following the Asr prayer. The family will be receiving condolences from July 20 to July 22.
