Donald Trump says he doesn’t want tariffs on China to ‘go higher’ fearing trade halt, latest news:
US President Donald Trump said he was reluctant to keep increasing tariffs on China, warning that it could lead to a complete halt in trade between the two countries.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office on Thursday during a meeting with Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni, Trump said, “At a certain point, I don’t want them to go higher because at a certain point, you make it where people don’t buy. So I may not want to go higher, or I may not want to even go up to that level,” the Hindustan Times reported, citing Bloomberg.
He further added, “I may want to go to less because, you know, you want people to buy.”

During the media interaction, Trump also claimed that Beijing had been reaching out to him in an attempt to broker a deal between the two nations. “I have a very good relationship with President Xi, and I think it’s going to continue. And I would say they have reached out a number of times,” he said.

Trump’s administration had earlier announced sweeping new tariffs of up to 245% on Tuesday. In response, China had already imposed a 125% levy on US goods and stated that it would not raise tariffs further, even if the US does.
China has also filed a lawsuit against the United States with the World Trade Organization (WTO) over the new tariff measures.
