The report went on to request an official ban on the Bhagat Singh Memorial Foundation, alongside an investigation of its officials.
Bhagat Singh Controversy in Pakistan Latest News: In a controversial statement, Pakistan’s Punjab government referred to Bhagat Singh, one of India’s most celebrated revolutionary heroes, as a “criminal,” opposing calls to honor him in Lahore. The government submitted this stance to the Lahore High Court, resisting the renaming of Shadman Chowk and the proposed installation of a statue to commemorate Singh, who is widely revered for his fight against British colonial rule.
Assistant Advocate General Asgar Leghari, representing the government, argued that Singh’s actions—specifically his killing of a British officer—constituted a criminal act rather than a revolutionary one. Leghari further argued that calling Bhagat Singh a martyr conflicts with Islamic principles. Citing retired Commodore Tariq Majeed, the government’s report also alleged that the Bhagat Singh Memorial Foundation was working against Pakistani cultural values, claiming the foundation promotes views counter to Islamic and national ideologies.
The report went on to request an official ban on the Bhagat Singh Memorial Foundation, alongside an investigation of its officials. This development follows a 2018 court order to rename Shadman Chowk in Singh's honor, a decision that has yet to be implemented. Imtiaz Rashid Qureshi, the foundation’s president, had filed a contempt petition over the delay, with the next hearing set for January 17, 2025.
