The Union Government has officially sanctioned Rs 411.96 crore for the construction of the Rajpura Bypass Line, a strategic infrastructure project aimed at easing severe congestion on the Northern Railway network. Union Minister of State for Railways, Ravneet Bittu, confirmed that the Ministry of Railways has approved the project to alleviate bottlenecks at the Rajpura Yard, which is currently operating at saturated capacity.

According to Minister Bittu, the project involves laying a 13.46 km bypass line connecting the New Shambhu Dedicated Freight Corridor (DFC) station with the Kauli station on the existing Rajpura-Bathinda line. This initiative is part of the "Umbrella Work 2025-26" for new rail line projects across Indian Railways. The Ambala-Jalandhar section is recognised as one of the busiest corridors, with line capacity utilisation projected to exceed 165 per cent by 2030-31 if left unaddressed.

The new bypass will provide direct access for trains, allowing them to bypass the congested Rajpura Yard entirely. Minister Bittu highlighted that this will facilitate smoother movement for both freight and passenger traffic. Furthermore, the direct link to the Dedicated Freight Corridor at New Shambhu is expected to significantly enhance freight logistics and speed. This development marks a critical step toward modernising regional rail infrastructure to keep pace with the nation's growing transportation demands.
