California Wildfires Death Toll Latest News Today: Southern California is reeling under devastating wildfires that have claimed the lives of at least five people, injured dozens, and destroyed over 100 structures, according to ABC News. The fires, fueled by dry and windy conditions, have spread across several areas, prompting widespread evacuations.

LA County Fire Chief Anthony Marrone confirmed that the Eaton Fire in Altadena alone has scorched 2,227 acres with zero containment. “The cause of death for the civilians is yet to be determined,” he stated during a press briefing.

Meanwhile, the Palisades Fire, raging in Los Angeles' Pacific Palisades neighborhood, has consumed over 5,000 acres and an estimated 1,000 structures. Tens of thousands of residents have been evacuated, with officials reporting multiple injuries from the rapidly spreading blaze.

Adding to the crisis, the Hurst Fire northeast of San Fernando has already burned 500 acres, while resources remain stretched thin. LAPD Chief James McDonnell admitted, “LA County is not equipped to handle four major fires simultaneously. This is not a normal red flag alert.”

The situation has also led to widespread power outages, with 245,000 customers in Los Angeles County affected.

State of Emergency Declared

California Governor Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency, visiting affected areas to oversee response efforts. “This is a highly dangerous windstorm creating extreme fire risks. We’re already seeing the destructive impacts,” Newsom said. He urged residents to heed evacuation orders and expressed gratitude to first responders for their swift action.

Federal assistance is underway, with the Biden-Harris administration deploying US Forest Service Large Air Tankers, firefighting helicopters, and engines. FEMA has also approved a Fire Management Assistance Grant to support firefighting efforts and reimburse costs.

Residents are advised to remain vigilant and follow emergency protocols as officials work tirelessly to contain the fires and prevent further devastation.
