U.S. Supreme Court Rejects Mumbai Terror Attack Accused Tahawwur Rana’s Plea to Stop Extradition to India, Latest News: The United States Supreme Court has rejected Tahawwur Rana’s plea seeking a stay on his extradition to India, the ANI has reported.
Rana, a 64-year-old Canadian citizen of Pakistani origin, is an accused in the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks.
In an order dated Monday, April 7, 2025, the Supreme Court stated, “The application for stay addressed to The Chief Justice and referred to the Court is denied.”
Rana had filed an emergency application with Chief Justice John Roberts on March 20, 2025, seeking to halt his extradition. Earlier, in February 2025, he had submitted an “Emergency Application for Stay Pending Litigation of Petition for Writ of Habeas Corpus” to Associate Justice Elena Kagan, which was denied.
Following this, Rana renewed his request, directing it to Chief Justice Roberts. The matter was circulated among justices and scheduled for consideration during the Supreme Court's conference on April 4, 2025.
In his earlier plea, Rana cited severe health concerns, including a high-risk abdominal aortic aneurysm, Parkinson’s disease with cognitive decline, and a suspected bladder tumor. He claimed that extraditing him to India would endanger his life due to possible targeting based on his nationality, religion, and cultural background.
U.S. President Donald Trump had earlier announced Rana’s extradition to India during a joint press conference with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in February 2025.
Rana previously served as a doctor in the Pakistan Army before immigrating to Canada in the late 1990s. He was arrested in the U.S. in 2009 for his role in terrorism-related activities and is currently lodged in a jail in Los Angeles.
He is accused of assisting his childhood friend David Headley, who scouted locations for the 2008 Mumbai attacks that killed 166 people. Rana was convicted in 2011 for providing material support to the terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba and for his involvement in a plot to attack a Danish newspaper. He was sentenced to 14 years in prison and has been serving his term in the U.S.
