Google AI Now Lets You Ask Questions by Uploading a Photo, Latest News: Google has updated its AI Mode feature, now allowing users to ask questions by simply uploading or snapping a picture. The feature is being rolled out to millions more Google Labs users across the U.S., significantly expanding access.
Previously, AI Mode was available only to a limited group of users through Google Labs—Google's experimental platform for testing new features before a wider release. Access was typically invite-only or through a waitlist, giving select users early access to AI tools like "Help Me Write" in Gmail and Docs, AI-enhanced search, and more.
Robby Stein, Google’s VP of Product, explained, “With AI Mode’s new multimodal understanding, you can snap a photo or upload an image, ask a question about it, and get a rich, comprehensive response with links to dive deeper.”
He further stated,“AI Mode builds on our years of work in visual search and takes it a step further. With Gemini’s multimodal capabilities, AI Mode can understand the entire scene in an image—including the context of how objects relate to one another and their unique materials, colors, shapes, and arrangements. Drawing on our deep visual search expertise, Lens precisely identifies each object in the image. Then, using our query fan-out technique, AI Mode issues multiple queries about the entire image and its components, offering broader and deeper information than traditional Google Search. The result is a highly nuanced and contextually relevant response, helping users take the next step.”
Google confirmed the expansion by saying, “We’ve now started to make AI Mode available to millions more Labs users in the U.S.”
This move marks a significant shift in how users interact with search engines—by blending visual context with AI-driven reasoning, Google is redefining search as more intuitive and personalized, potentially transforming how we seek and consume information online.
